Best Places In The Treasure Valley To Connect With Nature
There are so many places to enjoy the great outdoors here in Idaho, especially in the Treasure Valley. Getting outside and immersing yourself in nature has so many benefits, both mental and physical, that it’s worth taking the time out of your busy schedule to unwind and connect with nature every now and then. In today’s article, we’re going to showcase some of our favorite places around town where you can do just that. Enjoy!
For Context (Why we love the outdoors!)
The Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) five-element theory mirrors the interdependent, dynamic, ever-changing energy present in nature and within our bodies.
In the generating cycle, each element gives way to the next. We see this in nature.
In this cycle:
fire generates earth- think ashes are created from a fire that nourish the earth to create earth and plants
earth generates metal- think how the earth gives us minerals
metal generates water- think how the earth’s deep interior transfers heat to the surface forcing water out of rock
water generates wood- think how rain makes trees grow
wood generates fire- think forest fires or how you build a camping fire with wood
We are able to assign an organ to each element. Each organ system within our bodies influences other organ systems with more vigor and frequency. We need fire (translated as heat or metabolism) to process energy from our food in our earth (translated as our spleen and stomach system) in order to have energy to move, think, grow and birth. When our bodies are in sync with nature no disease will appear. When our organ systems are out of balance with nature then disease and disorders will wreak havoc. Acupuncture and herbal medicine can balance these systems and elements we find in perfect harmony in nature.
In nature a forest fire knows when to burn, the rains know when to come and the plants know when to sprout and hibernate and even die to recreate earth.
The Benefits Of Forest Bathing Regularly
No, forest bathing isn’t a new way to clean up your local forest, although that is always a good idea, but it is a way to deeply connect with the world around you by immersing yourself in the beauty of nature. Forest bathing has many benefits, like reducing stress and anxiety levels, helping to elevate mood and boost immunity levels, and some have even said that it helps to increase their creativity levels. Who knows, maybe Thoreau was onto something…That would explain why he spent so much time near Walden pond!
The Greenbelt
While not technically a park, the Boise Greenbelt is one of Idaho’s most treasured natural features and it is a truly breathtaking experience to lose yourself while quietly walking along its winding and peaceful path. With the temperatures spiking, the cool breeze coming off of the Boise River is refreshing and can keep you going on even the longest jog or stroll. Don’t forget to stay on the right!
Camel’s Back Park
If you haven’t been to Camel's Back Park lately, then do yourself a favor and stop on by. It has so many excellent amenities that include picnic tables, play areas for the kiddos, tennis and volleyball courts, and even an outdoor gym! Dive into nature and pump some iron in the same visit. This park also offers some of the best hiking trails in and around Boise, so definitely take advantage of that on one of these cooler mornings if you get a chance.
Idaho Botanical Garden
The Idaho Botanical Garden has so much to offer, year round! During the summer, you can explore its shady nooks and crannies while enjoying a bountiful array of the west’s most dazzling plants, trees, and flowers. During the evening you can catch a live concert under the stars. They also offer a bevy of classes on interesting things like planting, cultivating, and even art projects. This family friendly staple has something for everyone.
