Does Acupuncture Hurt? What You Need To Know Before Your First Session.

From an outsider’s perspective, getting acupuncture treatment looks a little alien in nature and definitely painful. After all, if I stick a sewing needle into my hand or arm or face or foot, then it will be incredibly painful and may even require medical intervention to heal the damage. Shots hurt! Vaccines hurt! Tattoos hurt! So, by that logic, getting a dozen or more needles pressed into your body during an acupuncture session must be excruciating, right? Wrong. We’re here to set the record straight about acupuncture, and its benefits and exactly how painful it can be (here’s a hint, it’s not painful!). So, if you’re a first timer and curious about entering into the wonderful world of acupuncture therapy, then this article is a great starting point!

What To Expect When You Are Undergoing Acupuncture For The First Time

Ok, the long and the short of it is that acupuncture just isn’t painful. In fact, you can experience intense release and relaxation during a session, including your very first session. Yes, it involves needles, but these needles are many times smaller than your average painful sewing needle and are clinically designed by experts to produce the maximum amount of benefit while minimizing any felt or perceived amount of pain. We can fit 10 of our needles inside the shaft of a typical needle at the doctor's office. They are that thin and soft. The number one thing we hear at our office is "that tickles", not "ouch". During the session many people say that it is the most relaxed they have ever felt. Some feel they go somewhere between heaven and earth- it is that euphoric of a feeling.

How Can Acupuncture Be Virtually Pain Free?

If you’re wondering how exactly getting poked by a bunch of needles can be virtually pain free, then you’ve come to the right place. Acupuncture needles are very fine and their points are designed to penetrate your skin cells without damaging them. The acupuncturists at Eagle Acupuncture are trained, over 4,000 hours, to help to place the needles in specific places around your body to reduce the chances of any felt pain. Not all acupuncturists have that much training so feel free to ask them. Those who perform dry needling usually only have 30 hours of training. Rest assured that not only does acupuncture not hurt, but it can be considered a relaxing therapy session much like a mud bath, cupping, or massage.
